Blue Slips When Do You Need a Blue Slip?

A Blue Slip, or Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection (AUVIS), is generally required when a vehicle needs to be registered in NSW and doesn't meet the requirements for a standard registration renewal.

You may need a Blue Slip if:

  • Your vehicle has been unregistered for more than 3 months
  • You're registering a vehicle in NSW for the first time
  • You've bought or brought a vehicle from interstate
  • Your registration has been cancelled
  • Your vehicle has been defected and requires a Blue Slip

If you're unsure whether you need a Blue Slip or another type of inspection, give our Wollongong team a call and we can point you in the right direction.

Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection

Blue Slips What We Check

A Blue Slip is a detailed inspection of your vehicle to make sure it meets NSW safety and registration requirements. Our authorised inspectors check the vehicle and its key components as part of the inspection.

The inspection can cover areas such as:

  • Brakes, steering and suspension
  • Tyres, wheels and lights
  • Seatbelts and other safety equipment
  • Engine and mechanical components
  • Vehicle identification and registration details

If your vehicle doesn't pass the inspection, we'll explain what needs to be addressed and can discuss the required repairs with you.

FAQ's Common questions

When do I need a Blue Slip?

You may need a Blue Slip if your vehicle has been unregistered for more than 3 months, is being registered in NSW for the first time, has been brought into NSW from interstate, or requires an inspection following certain registration or defect issues.

What's the difference between a Blue Slip and a Pink Slip?

A Pink Slip is a safety inspection generally required when renewing registration for eligible vehicles. A Blue Slip is a more detailed inspection for vehicles that need to be registered or re-registered in NSW.

What happens if my vehicle fails a Blue Slip inspection?

If your vehicle doesn't meet the required safety or registration standards, we'll explain what needs to be addressed. Any required repairs can then be discussed with our team before the vehicle is re-inspected.

How long is a Blue Slip valid for?

A passed Blue Slip is generally valid for 42 days from the date of issue. If you don't complete your registration within this period, you may need to have the vehicle inspected again.

Can you carry out repairs if my vehicle doesn't pass?

Yes. If repairs are required, our mechanics can discuss the work with you and, where appropriate, carry out the necessary repairs at our Wollongong workshop.
