It covers roadworthiness, but also includes identity checks, engine number and VIN validation, chassis integrity and checks for compliance with vehicle standards. Inspectors ensure the vehicle hasn’t been written off, stolen or modified beyond regulations.
It’s required when you’re registering a vehicle that’s unregistered or hasn’t been previously registered in NSW. Once your vehicle passes, the results are uploaded directly to Service NSW, so you can complete your registration.

What is a blue slip?
A blue slip is an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection required by Service NSW when registering a car that is unregistered, has been written off and repaired, or is being registered in NSW for the first time. It involves both a safety inspection and a verification of the vehicle’s identity and compliance with road standards. The results are sent electronically to RMS/Service NSW.
When do I need a blue slip instead of a pink slip?
You need a blue slip if your car is:
- Unregistered for more than three months
- Being registered in NSW from interstate or overseas
- A previously written-off vehicle that’s been repaired
- Missing plates or ownership documentation
If your vehicle is still registered but simply due for renewal, you’ll only need a pink slip. A blue slip is a prerequisite for registration where the vehicle’s history or identity needs official verification.
How long does a blue slip inspection take?
A blue slip inspection is more thorough than a pink slip and usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the vehicle's condition and paperwork. The process includes identity verification, safety checks and system diagnostics. To avoid delays, make sure you bring any relevant documentation such as proof of ownership, interstate registration papers or previous inspection reports.
